A child is searching for a friend’s house. He climbs winding and hilly paths and goes up and down narrow stairs. Along the alleyways, he asks people he meets for directions and makes his way to the friend’s house. The exhibition “Where Is My Friend’s Home” takes its title based on the film by director Abbas Kiarostami. It carries the ultimate message that it wishes to convey - where is your true home?

We constantly live our lives in a state of perpetual movement. We continuously walk and progress toward somewhere. Our places of residence are no different. We move by our will in search of a better environment, but we also find ourselves moving involuntarily due to societal circumstances. In the process of this movement, it raises the question of whether a physical dwelling, a “Home,” truly provides us with a stability of shelter. In the film, the child ultimately fails to find his friend’s house. However, after navigating the challenging path of searching a physical home, he discovers a new sense of direction and value at the end of that road.

This exhibition expands the concept of the shelter beyond a fixed place of residence and embarks on a journey to discover that our true shelters can exist in various forms. The concept of a “Home,” which we perceive as a shelter, only indeed carries its meaning when it generates memories and emotional connections with us. True shelter can be found when memories formed and emotional bonds get stronger with the space beyond its physical boundaries. And this relationship provides a sense of stability. What makes us feel secure? Even things that were initially unrelated to us can gradually grow relationships when we exchange love, spend time, and create memories with them. Meaningful objects can emerge from these relationships, enable us to find a comfort and new friendship with others, and even create a place of rest. Feeling a sense of shelter is not something extraordinary. Something ordinary, which initially seems unrelated to us, can become a true shelter as we start building a “Relationship” and begin to love it.

Hyundai Motor Company, based on its brand vision of “Progress for Humanity,” is making various efforts to enhance people’s everyday lives. What makes an ordinary life more enriching and valuable? It’s not just about making life more convenient and time-saving. Even in moments of solitude, positive emotions can be felt by staying in contact with certain objects, spaces, places, and so on, creating personal memories and experiencing meaningful moments. We accumulate valuable lives forming relationship with various subject and places and through the experiences that emerge from these relationships. This exhibition depicts the various forms of emotional shelters that emerged from “Building Relationships.” It is hoped that the exhibition can also become a journey for everyone to find their own shelter within their lives. 한 아이가 친구의 집을 찾아다닌다. 구불구불한 언덕길 을 올라가기도 하고, 좁은 계단을 오르락내리락하기도 한다. 골목길 사이사이 만나는 사람들에게 물어보며 친구의 집을 향해 간다. 전시 <내 친구의 집은 어디인가>는 압바스 키아로스타미 감독의 영화에서 착안한 제목으로 전시를 통해 던지고자 하는 궁극적인 메시지를 담고 있 다. 내 친구, 당신의 집은 어디인가?

우리는 끊임없이 이동하며 살아간다. 계속해서 어디론가 향해서 걸어가고 나아간다. 머무는 거주지 또한 마찬가 지다. 더 나은 환경을 위해 스스로 이동하기도 하지만 사회적 환경과 상황으로 인해 타의로 이동하기도 한다. 이 러한 이동 과정은 과연 물리적 거주지 ‘집’이 우리에게 안 정을 주는 쉘터인가 하는 의문을 품게 한다. 영화에서 아 이는 결국 친구의 집을 찾지 못한다. 하지만 물리적인 집 을 찾아다녔던 험난한 길을 넘어서니, 그 길 끝에 있던 새로운 방향성과 가치를 찾아낸다.

본 전시는 쉘터를 고정된 거주지로 한정 짓지 않고, 기능 적 범주를 확장해서 다양한 형태로 존재하는 각자의 진 정한 쉘터는 어디인지 찾아 나가는 여정이다. 우리가 쉘터로 인식하는 ‘집’은 ‘물리적 건물(House)’이라는 개념 에서 ‘정서적으로 느끼는 집(Home)’이 될 때, 공간을 넘 어서 집과의 추억이 생겨나고 나와의 정서적 교류가 더 해질 때, 진정한 쉘터로의 의미를 갖게 된다. 우리와의 관계가 형성되며 정서적으로 안정을 느낄때 진정한 ‘쉘터’, 그 의미가 구축되는 것이다. 그럼 우리가 안정을 느끼는 것은 무엇 때문일까? 나와 관련이 없다고 생각하는 것들도 점차 우리가 사랑을 주고받는 관계가 되어 정을 주고, 시간을 보내며, 나와의 추억이 쌓인다. 이러한 관계 속에서 의미 있는 사물이 생기기도 하고, 타인과의 관계에서 편안함을 느끼며 친구가 되고, 쉼이 되는 장소가 생기기도 한다. 이는 정서적 쉘터가 되는 대상과 나와의 ‘관계 맺음’의 과정이다. 쉘터로 느끼는 것은 특별한 것이 아니다. 처음에는 나와 관계가 없는 것, 평범해 보이는 것들이 나와 관계를 형성하고, 내가 그것을 사랑하게 되면서 진정한 쉘터가 된다.

현대자동차는 ‘인류를 위한 진보(Progress for Humanity)’라는 브랜드 비전을 바탕으로, 사람들의 일상 을 보다 가치롭고 의미 있게 만들도록 다양한 노력을 하 고 있다. 그렇다면 평범한 일상을 풍요롭게 만드는, 그리 고 가치 있는 것으로 만드는 것은 무엇일까? 단순히 생활이 편리해지고 시간이 절약되는 것만은 아닐 것이다. 혼자만의 시간이라 느끼는 때에도 대부분 어떤 사물, 공간, 장소 등에 머무르거나 마주하며 느끼는 긍정적인 감정들이 나만의 추억을 만들고 의미 있는 시간을 느낄 수 있도록 한 여러 대상, 장소와의 관계 맺음과 그 속에서 우러나는 경험을 통해 우리는 가치 있는 삶을 축적하게 되는 것이다. 본 전시의 핵심 키워드인 ‘관계 맺음’을 통 해 정서적 쉘터를 찾아 나가며, 이를 통해 각자의 삶 속 에서 나만의 쉘터를 찾는 여정이 되기를 기대한다.
